SUMMITS & COULOIRS

Snake Couloir

A classic ski mountaineering objective in the San Juans.

The Snake is a striking, S-shaped couloir that cuts down the north face of Sneffels. It’s considered one of the more aesthetic big mountain ski lines in the San Juans, with a European alpine feel.

Enjoy 1,900–2,000 ft of vertical skiing depending on how high you can start. We approach from Yankee Boy Basin and rappel into the couloir for the full ski mountaineer experience.

Steep skiing is the name of the game. Expect 45-55 degree skiing. Our expert guides can implement belayed skiing techniques to give you the added confidence with your jump turns. Once through the couloir enjoy amazing squiggle turns on the apron. Skin back up to the saddle and harvest the corn skiing back down Lavender Couloir and directly to your car for celebratory drinks and chips.
